Ningbo Toprise Security Products Co.,LTD, as one of the China’s leading coverall manufacturers since 2009, would like to share the various fabrics for coverall production to clients around the world.

Coveralls are one-piece protective garments designed to safeguard workers from various workplace hazards. They are widely used across different industries, such as construction, manufacturing, oil and gas, healthcare and etc. Before the selection of fabrics for coverall, it’s very significant to have a knowledge about the durability, breathability, water resistance and fire retardant like welding or oil and gas (FR-treated cotton, Nomex) of different fabrics.

Common Fabric Types for Coveralls

100% Cotton Coverall

Cotton fabric is made from a natural strong and durable fiber and is one of the most comfortable and breathable fabrics for coverall producing; But its durability decreases when exposed to extreme conditions such as heavy washing, high heat, or friction. And it is less resistant to abrasion compared to synthetic fibers (polyester or polyester/cotton blended fabrics). Knees and elbows could get easily worn out over time. So it could be very essential to get the knees, elbows, shoulders and some other easily-worn areas reinforced for the coverall based on the practical environment requirements;  And it is easy to wrinkle, shrink and fade after washing.  Therefore,  it is suggested to arrange a pre-shrinking treatment for cotton fabric, especially when the logo is quite large. Also it’s not suggested to have complicated logos printed onto the coveralls.

Working Environments for Cotton Coveralls

  • Hot and Humid Climates: in agriculture, construction, or light industrial work.
  • Non-Hazardous Manufacturing Jobs: for tasks like assembly, packaging, or light machinery operation.
  • Light Maintenance and Mechanical Work: mechanics and maintenance workers for protection from dirt, dust, or minor physical risks.
  • General Outdoor Work: landscaping, gardening, or farming

Polyester/Cotton Coverall

Polyester/cotton blends can be varied according to their ratios. The higher the polyester ratio for coverall is, the better the resilience against wearing and tearing will be. And it is coming with a less comfort as the cotton ratio decreases. And the printing on polyester/cotton blends would be much more stable than that on cotton.  As a fabric more comfortable and affordable than cotton, polyester/cotton blends is widely used in coverall production. Here below are some common ratios and their effects.

  • 50/50 Blend (50% Cotton, 50% Polyester): It provides a balance between comfort and durability. The cotton makes the fabric breathable, while the polyester adds strength and resilience to wearing and tearing.
  • 65/35 Blend (65% Polyester, 35% Cotton): This blend is more durable than a 50/50 blend. The higher polyester content ensures better resistance to shrinking, tearing, and abrasion, while the cotton adds some softness and breathability.
  • 80/20 Blend (80% Polyester, 20% Cotton): Predominantly polyester, this blend offers maximum durability and resistance to harsh conditions but with less comfort and breathability compared to lower polyester blends.

Working Environments for Polyester/Cotton Coveralls

  • General Industrial Work:  assembly lines, packaging, and light machinery operation.
  • Construction and Carpentry:  carpentry, masonry, or electrical work.
  • Outdoor Work in Moderate Climates: landscaping, maintenance, or utility work
  • Automotive and Mechanical Work: The blend’s strength and resistance to oil and grease stains make it suitable for mechanics and automotive technicians working in repair shops or service centers.
  • Agriculture: It’s ideal for agricultural tasks, offering breathability and durability, where dirt, moisture, and exposure to the elements are common.

However, poor polyester-cotton blended fabric is easy to pill. This is because the blending strength and toughness of the polyester and cotton fiber are very high, which makes the pilling difficult to fall off. As it stay for a long time, the pilling would be quite troublesome.

100% Polyester Coverall

Polyester, a fast-drying fabric for coverall is usually more durable and resilient than cotton or cotton/polyester blend one. Known as a fabric of the best color fastness, the polyester fabric is the most suitable for complicated printing.  Also polyester coverall is much more affordable than cotton work-wear.  However, it feels not so soft and breathable as cotton fabric. And the pure polyester fabric could generate static electricity easily.

Working Environments for 100% Polyester Coveralls

  • Outdoor Work in Wet Conditions: outdoor construction, agriculture, or landscaping.
  • Maintenance and Cleaning Jobs: Polyester coveralls are perfect for maintenance or janitorial work where exposure to water, dirt, and grease is common.
  • Food Processing and Handling: In food processing facilities, 100% polyester coveralls are ideal due to their ability to resist stains, maintain hygiene, and withstand frequent washing. Polyester’s quick-drying feature also helps prevent bacterial growth.
  • Light Industrial Work: For industries such as warehousing, packaging, or assembly lines

Enhancements

To balance the features of cotton and polyester fabric, we sometimes can add a layer of abrasion-resistant fabric (like oxford) on the easy-to-tear places such as knees and elbows.  In this way, we can not only get the perfect breathability of the cotton fabric, but also improve the coverall durability by reinforcing some of the key parts.

Market Preference for Fabric Contents

  • Africa:  People there prefer 100% cotton of high gram weight up to 230gsm or more, in spite of the local hot weather.
  • Middle East: Prefer 100% lightweight and light-colored 180gsm cotton or least cotton-rich polyester/cotton blend fabrics

Conclusion

It’s suggested to select the high quality fabric to market demands and make a balance between comfort, safety and durability.
