What are the Types of Warning Tape?

Table of Contents

We have been exporting warning tape since 2019, Our company is dedicated to providing the high quality and cost-effective warning tapes to customers worldwide.

Importance of Warning Tape

Warning tape is brightly colored for visual alerts. And it is often marked with cautionary words or hazard symbol to warn people about potential dangers or restricted areas. The tape provides a clear, visible indication of hazards, especially in large or noisy environments. It is an affordable, easy-to-use tool for safety communication to prevent accidents.

Warning Tape in Different Sectors

In hazardous areas like wet floors, slippery surfaces, or unstable ground, warning tape can provide a clear visual clue; In buildings, glow-in-the-dark or reflective warning tapes can mark emergency exits and pathways; More often in personal protective equipment (PPE) zones shall be cordoned with warning tape.

In construction, such as excavation sites, open trenches and areas with heavy machinery warning tapes can effectively help people away from the potential dangers. Also we use warning tapes to help identify buried utility lines (e.g., electrical, water, gas lines) during digging or excavation.

The applications of warning tapes are also common in law enforcement. We can use warning tapes for crime scene preservation, crowd control and traffic incidents.

Types of Warning Tape by Material

Non-Adhesive Warning Tape

Barricade/Caution Tape

We use lightweight, non-adhesive caution tape to block off or mark hazardous areas, often at construction sites. The caution tapes are commonly in Yellow/black, red/white colors.

Flagging Tape

Non-adhesive, brightly colored flagging warning tape can be in various colors for different purposes.

Red flagging tape is typical for surveying markers or indication of dangers;

Yellow flagging tape is for caution or warning;

Blue flagging tape is for marking water-related utilities or boundaries;

Green flagging tape is mark environmental boundaries or neutral areas.

White flagging tape is a general marker or to indicate excavation sites.

Neon pink flagging tape is for surveying, especially in forestry or high-visibility needs.

Neon orange flagging tape is for marking high-risk areas or signaling specific points in construction and road work.

Flagging tape with red/white stripes Indicates high-risk or hazardous areas.

Flagging tape with yellow/black stripes signals caution or areas with potential danger.

Adhesive Warning Tape

Floor Marking Tape is a kind of heavy-duty adhesive-backed tape for floor marking in warehouses, factories, or for social distancing measures.They are common in red/white for danger zones and green/white for safe areas.

Hazard Striped Tape is characteristic of diagonal hazard stripes to highlight dangerous areas or obstacles. The hazard striped tape is more often in black/yellow and red/white.

Adhesive anti-slip tape is usually of rough and textured surface for better grip. It is widely used on stairs, ramps, or slippery surfaces to prevent falls.

Common Materials for Warning Tape

There are various warning tapes available on the market. Below are some common materials available: PE tape, PET tape, PVC tape, aluminum tape and reflective tape.

PE tape is often non-adhesive, most cost-effective and easy to install for short-term barricade warning. To help make purchasing, below i’d like to share some common specifications on market for reference (thickness from 0.03mm to 0.08mm; width from 5cm, 7cm to 7.5cm and roll length from 50m, 100m, 200m, 300m to 500m) .

PVC tape can be either adhesive or non-adhesive. Being resistant to moisture, oils, and many chemicals, the warning tape is often designed for floor marking, anti-slip purpose, or marking some equipment and machinery.

PET tape is of high tensile strength and wear resistance. PET tape is a more durable, UV and temperature-resistant for long-term marking outdoor.

Aluminum tape is highly reflective and fireproof. The tape is suitable for marking fire hazards, electrical equipment, or high-voltage areas. Moreover, it is detectable by metal detectors. So we also use the tape to help mark and identify buried utilities such as water, gas, electric, telecommunications, and sewer lines.

Reflective tape is often adhesive-backing. It is often applied to traffic signs, barriers, and vehicles (trucks, bikes).  Also we can see the warning tape of high visibility in warehouses, construction sites, or factories.

Types of Warning Tape by Application

A. Caution Tape is usually in red/white color with “CAUTION” printing to mark off hazardous areas or prevent unauthorized access.

B. Danger Tape is similar to caution tape but in red/black color and marked with “DANGER” text to indicate higher-level hazards, such as electrical or chemical risks.

C. Underground Utility Marking Tape is to indicate the presence of underground utilities (e.g., gas, water, electrical lines). Each color has its special meaning. Blue is for water, red for electric, yellow for gas, and orange for telecommunications lines.

D. Safety and Reflective Tape is often in yellow, red or silver color. We usually apply the reflective tapes to vehicles, equipment, or hazardous edges.

Types of Warning Tape by Design

A. Text Printed Tape (e.g., “DANGER”, “CAUTION”, “DO NOT CROSS”, “NO TRESPASSING”, “UTILITY LINE”) is designed to give clear and direct messaging in hazardous areas.

B. Color-Coded Tape could be solid or striped colored without text. For example, we use yellow/black tape against physical hazards or trip risks, while recommending red/white warning tape for fire equipment locations or flammable materials.

C. Glow-in-the-Dark Tape or reflective tape is to mark exits, pathways, or dangerous areas in low-light conditions, especially in emergency situations.

Conclusion

As a professional warning tape factory, we are writing the blogs on the types of tapes to help clients get a knowledge about the materials, thickness, width, color, printing, roll length, performance, applications and other specifications related to the tape.
